The Joll (Friedman) Self Retaining Retractor is used to retract soft tissues and enhance the visualization of the surgical field in small surgical sites, like in thyroid and vaginal surgeries. The device has an overall size of 15.5 cm. It has a characteristic U shape with two symmetrical curved shafts and a horizontal rotational locking bar. Each blade has 2 sharp prongs that are directed outwards, and the locking mechanism fixes the retractor in place so that the operator can concentrate on the surgical manipulations.
